I visited Memphis back in 2016, and while trends change, the heart of the city remains timeless. If you’ve never been, let me tell you—Memphis is packed with must-see spots, quirky attractions, and a whole lot of character. Whether you love music, history, outdoor adventures, or just really adorable ducks (yes, ducks), this guide will take you through some of the best things to do in Memphis, with a little throwback to my own trip along the way.

There’s something about Memphis. Maybe it’s the soul-stirring blues drifting from Beale Street, the history etched into every street corner, or the lingering presence of Elvis himself. Whatever it is, this city has a rhythm all its own.

If you love starting your morning with a run (or a leisurely stroll), Shelby Farms Greenline is the place to be. This urban trail stretches for miles, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle. I like running as a form of exploring the city that I visit, gives it a unique perspective to the city that I visit.

When I ran here in 2016, I was blown away by how serene it was—one minute, you’re in the city, and the next, you’re surrounded by trees, open fields, and the kind of fresh air that makes you forget you’re anywhere near downtown. Whether you’re biking, jogging, or just enjoying the quiet, this is a must-visit for outdoor lovers.

📍 Travel Tip: The best time to go is early morning for cooler temps and fewer crowds. Bike rentals are available if running isn’t your thing.

You’ve probably heard of The Peabody Hotel, but did you know it’s home to a squad of ducks that live like royalty?

Every day at 11 AM and 5 PM, these well-dressed ducks waddle down a red carpet from their rooftop penthouse to the hotel fountain—yes, a full-fledged duck parade. It’s a tradition dating back nearly a century, and it’s hilariously charming.

I watched the Peabody Duck March in 2016, and let me tell you—it’s way more entertaining than you’d expect. I watched them get off the elevator and go back to the elevator after their little swim. There I was, surrounded by grown adults (myself included), all grinning like kids over these VIP ducks.

📍 Travel Tip: Arrive at least 30 minutes early for a good spot—this show gets packed!

Even if you’re not a hardcore baseball fan, catching a game at AutoZone Park is a fun, laid-back experience. Home to the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals), this stadium brings the energy of Major League Baseball with a more relaxed, affordable vibe.

I swung by the stadium back in 2016, and even without catching a game, I loved the atmosphere. There’s something nostalgic about the smell of hot dogs, the crack of a bat, and a cold drink on a warm night.

Some places just hit different. The Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, is one of those places.

Today, it’s home to the National Civil Rights Museum, a deeply moving and incredibly well-done exhibit that walks you through the history of the Civil Rights Movement. I visited in 2016, and standing outside the motel, looking at the preserved balcony, I felt the weight of history in a way that’s hard to describe.

📍 Travel Tip: Plan for at least two hours inside the museum—there’s a lot to take in, and you’ll want time to reflect.

Ah, Graceland. The home of The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, the place where Elvis lived, and one of the most visited homes in the U.S.

Back in 2016, I made the pilgrimage to Graceland, and two things stood out:

Walking through the rooms (hello, Jungle Room!), seeing Elvis’ cars, costumes, and gold records—it’s surreal. Whether you’re a die-hard Elvis fan or just curious about his legacy, Graceland is a Memphis must-do.

Memphis is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.

• Spring (March–May): The best overall time to visit! The weather is warm but not too hot, and the city comes alive with festivals like the Beale Street Music Festival and blooming cherry blossoms at Shelby Farms.

• Summer (June–August): Hot and humid, but if you don’t mind the heat, you’ll find fewer crowds and plenty of indoor attractions (hello, Graceland’s air conditioning!).

• Fall (September–November): Cooler temperatures, stunning fall foliage, and events like the Memphis Food & Wine Festival make this a great time for a visit.

• Winter (December–February): Mild winter temperatures and festive lights make December a cozy time to explore, though some attractions have shorter hours.

📍 Travel Tip: If you want to avoid crowds but still enjoy nice weather, April–May and September–October are the sweet spots for a Memphis trip!
